Adopt a Station

We recognise that our train stations form an integral part of a community’s infrastructure. Many of our facilities are un-staffed which leaves them vulnerable to vandalism and in some cases lacking in appearance.
 
If you think your local station would benefit from some regular local input, or if you’re simply interested in monitoring and reporting on its performance and repair this could be your opportunity to get involved. 

 
THE BENEFITS

  • Improvement of your station helps enhance the overall appearance of the locality, and makes a welcoming and lasting impression on visitors and locals alike.
  • Add an extra boost to those communities entering competitions such as the ‘Translink Ulster in Bloom’, and ‘Best Kept’.
  • Gain a cleaner, safer, more welcoming facility.
  • A nicer station encourages more people to use the train therefore reducing car use, which has real benefits for our environment.

   
WHAT CAN I DO?

As a volunteer we would appreciate your assistance on any level, but we will always need to meet and agree your input before you carry out any activities on Translink property.

As a guide we have identified two levels of participation which you may be interested in:

Station Monitoring

If you and other members of your community would like to keep a watchful eye on the condition of your local station this may be right for you.

You can pass this information on by:

  • using a record sheet, which you can print from here as often as you need to. Copies are also available from your Translink ‘Adopt a Station’ point of contact; or
  • you and your Translink ‘Adopt a Station’ point of contact can develop your own way of reporting.

Regular updates from you will allow your local Translink Manager to address matters promptly, before they become a problem.

Station Improvement Scheme

For those communities which want to take the initiative a step further, there is the possibility of taking an active role in improving the appearance and general up keep of a station.

Get together with other like minded people and decide what activities you would like to carry out.

Many groups in your area may already be available to lend a hand such as the Scouts, Environmental Conservationists, Ulster in Bloom Committee, or local Eco-Schools.

Identify a group to act as the ‘Adoption Group’, which can co-ordinate the input from the rest of the community.

Then link up with your local Translink ‘Adopt a Station’ point of contact (telephone 0845 86 206 86).

The Association of Community Rail Partnerships – ACoRP, provides excellent practical guidance on how to approach the Adopt a Station initiative. With case studies from across the U.K. this website will provide useful contacts and a forum to share ideas. 
   
TRANSLINK ASSISTANCE

Translink may also be able to provide assistance through supply of personnel and equipment for some activities.

There may be some financial support available for these projects. This can be discussed and confirmed through your local Translink ‘Adopt a Station’ point of contact.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Before embarking on any activities at your station you must first meet with a Translink member of staff for a safety briefing.

The rail environment can be very dangerous so always seek agreement with Translink before working at any of our facilities.

Remember, you will only ever be allowed access to areas where other members of the public are permitted. Always be vigilant, be aware of the other members of your group and where they are working.
