New Craigavon Area Hospital Bus Service Launched

12 May 2004

Translink has launched a new, fully accessible bus service running between Dungannon and Craigavon Area Hospital – Northern Ireland’s first express service to operate from an outlying rural area to an Area Hospital.

John Kidd, Translink’s Dungannon District Manager explained the new service was developed in order to meet increased demand for access to Craigavon Area Hospital, following the downgrading of Dungannon Hospital medical services.

“Thanks to support from the Department for Regional Development, we have introduced a service which vastly improves South-East Tyrone residents’ access to medical services in Craigavon,” he said.

“In addition, the service which departs Dungannon Bus Station to facilitate local connections from Coalisland incorporates stops at Moygashel and Portadown (station & town). This not only improves access to the main Portadown shopping area, but also offers integrated rail and bus travel to the Hospital.”

Mr Kidd went on to explain how the service mirrored schemes established for the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald and the Antrim Area Hospital, which facilitate transport from nearby local market towns.

“I’d also like to remind our Senior SmartPass holders that they can use the service free of charge on   presentation of their SmartPass, and similarly, Half Fare SmartPass holders are entitled to their half fare concession.

“We constantly strive to tailor services to meet passengers’ needs, and hope this new service will ensure the provision of the best possible, accessible service.” Mr Kidd concluded.
