NI Railways has 23 trains which were purchased as part of an £80 million investment approved in December 2000 by the Northern Ireland Assembly. All 23 ‘C3k’ trains are in public service on Northern Ireland’s rail network.
The trains were built to NIRailways’ specification, meeting the highest standards in terms of safety, accessibility and comfort. They are compliant with all relevant UK standards. Capable of travelling at speeds of up to 90mph or 145kmph, each three-car train has seating for 200 passengers. Each member of staff within the rail company worked hard to ensure that the quality of service offered on these trains is of the very highest standard.
The introduction of the new trains into service marked an important milestone for rail service in Northern Ireland. As a company, Translink has exciting and commercially viable plans for further investment in the delivery of a modern, high quality railway network for the wider local community. These plans are part of a strategy to provide a strong and viable public transport alternative to the car that has recognized economic and environmental benefits.
