From today (28 April) Ulsterbus passengers in the Antrim area are benefiting from a new, improved Town Service with low floor buses, clockface timetabling, better passenger information and modern bus stop infrastructure following Translink’s review of Ulsterbus services across Northern Ireland.

Additional improvements include: an earlier start time for Town Services; a half-hourly frequency on services 321A, B and E; and an hourly frequency on services 321C and D. The new Town Service also delivers better integration with the 109A service to Belfast International Airport and peak time rail services to and from Belfast. A new pilot 321R service connects with the 17.53 and 18.28 trains from Belfast and operates around the perimeter of Antrim housing estates.

From today passengers can also take advantage of a special £1.70 day ticket, allowing unlimited travel within the Town Service boundary throughout the day on which the ticket is purchased. In addition, from today until 31st May Translink will waive the initial £1.50 charge to purchase an Ulsterbus Smartlink Multi-Journey card, meaning passengers only pay to top up their card with journeys.

Speaking about the Ulsterbus review Translink District Manager, Martin Lundy said, “We are delighted to be able to offer our customers in Antrim these new, improved services and are confident that they will be welcomed by the local community.  Developments are designed to enhance public transport attractiveness by offering easy to use, accessible services which are more suited to our passengers’ needs.

“Low floor vehicles will be used on all Town Services enabling us to improve accessibility for parents with small children as well as those with mobility difficulties. Improved connections with rail services and Belfast International Airport will also help us deliver a better offering for commuters and holidaymakers,” he added.

“The Antrim review formed part of Translink’s wider review of local Ulsterbus services which is designed to deliver passenger growth in line with the Regional Transportation Strategy targets.

“Public transport has a significant contribution to make towards delivering modern, healthy and efficient towns. As such we are committed to delivering a growing integrated public transport network, which will ultimately support the economic growth and social development of the region.”

Mayor of Antrim, Adrian Cochrane-Watson added: “I am delighted that, as a result of Translink’s strategic review, a new improved service has been introduced to Antrim.  The enhancements are good news, not only for the residents of Antrim but for the businesses too.  The improvement of connections with both rail services and Belfast International Airport should result in an increase of visitors to the town, which in turn will provide a boost the Borough’s economy.”

Complementing the new improved Ulsterbus services will be better bus priority measures and enhanced waiting facilities in Antrim town centre, which the Department for Regional Development (DRD) has confirmed it will deliver later this year.
