NI Railways Apprentices on the Right Track

12 August 2003

Two NI Railways Electrical Apprentices, Gareth McMinn from Carrickfergus and David Whiteside from Belfast, were highly commended in the inaugural Centre for Rail Skills (CfRS) “Modern Apprentice of the Year” awards recently.

Both apprentices were commended for demonstrating the highest levels of performance and commitment to develop themselves, and were also recognised as excellent role models for others seeking a career in the rail industry.

“Gareth and David are examples of a new generation entering employment with NIR to follow rewarding careers,” said Mal McGreevy, NIR’s Engineering Executive.

“Their awards are indicative of NIR’s intensive and industry leading approach to training, which means that staff are being trained and qualified to nationally endorsed standards. Gareth and David did extremely well in this national competition, and I would like to congratulate them both on their achievement.” He concluded.
