Translink’s £1.6 million boost for Carrickfergus

08 July 2003

Mayor of Carrickfergus, Alderman Mrs May Beattie, and local councillors viewed the recently completed, fully accessible, Carrickfergus Railway Station which has been subject to a £1.2 million refurbishment and upgrading today (8 July).

The council delegation also had the opportunity to examine the first of five new ‘Optare’ accessible minibuses, which are set to be introduced on Carrickfergus town services over the next two months - a £400,000 investment.

“This investment will bring considerable benefits to public transport customers in Carrickfergus,” said Frank Moore, Carrickfergus Controller.

“The new buses and station facilities which include passenger lifts, a new stairway, subway canopy, drainage system and CCTV, will provide the excellent service and surroundings that are becoming the standard for public transport users across Northern Ireland.

“These improvements along with the essential relay of the track between Belfast and Whitehead which is due to start later in the year, represent a major step in the development of a modern and safe public transport system which is accessible to all.” Frank concluded.

Ends.
