£1000 Reward Scheme extended to N I Railways

9 November 2001

Travelling by bus and rail should be as safe and pleasant as possible for both staff and passengers, however vandalism, anti-social behaviour and trespassing happen all too often across our public transport network. In an effort to tackle these problems Translink have extended its £1000 reward scheme, already in operation on Citybus (now Metro) and Ulsterbus, to cover Northern Ireland Railways.

Alan Mercer, Translink’s Director of Human Resources explained, “ A tough approach is taken to anti-social behaviour that may endanger the lives of staff or passengers, and to those caught trespassing on railway property.  This monetary reward scheme, which is currently operated successfully by both Citybus (now Metro) and Ulsterbus, is now being extended to N I Railways.  The money offered through this scheme is to act as an extra incentive for people to come forward and report such incidents”.

He added, “The scheme works on the basis that if a member of the public, or a member of staff witnesses any incident and are prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a person being convicted, then Translink will make a cash reward payment of up to £1,000 to the witness”.

He continued, “In the six month period from March to August 2001, 31 successful N I Railways prosecutions were made, with a cost to offenders of almost £4,500.

This scheme should help to increase this number of successful prosecutions and hence deter people from behaving in this kind of unacceptable and illegal manner”.

He concluded, “Together we need to stamp out vandalism, anti-social behaviour and trespassing, because everyone has the right to work or travel on our buses and trains and feel safe”.
